Yesterday I watched a documentary on Discovery Channel, talking about Artificial Intelligence and its impact and diffusion in society.
Achieving a cyborg-society is within reality, already in the present we’re part human and part machine, think about cell-phones, navigational systems, computers and so on.
Our society will be interconnected and overarched by a massive communication system which will contain 14 billion computers/devices in as little as five years from now, the step from thereon to a cyborg-world is small and achievable.
The documentary was of course all in favor of technological progression, but there are remarks to be made and healthy skepticism is in place.
I see two kinds of applications which come forth from the the abovementioned:
* ”External” technological progression and
* ”Internal” technological progression.
Both relate in this article to transhumanism.
The ”external” progression is the less intrusive and quite innocent one, it’s the progression which assists society externally, aiming on help and alleviating in daily life. As stated above, I’m referring to mobile devices, computers, navigational systems, health systems aimed at rejuvination etc.
The “internal” progression is the one where much more discussion is needed on, before employing all sorts of things for the sake of it.
What is the benefit of regenerating synapses, when it is part of natural physiological involution?
What is the benefit of implementing electrodes in brains, when it is part of natural physiological involution?
What is the benefit of upgrading the human brain when it’s not advancing over the past 30.000 years?
Technology follows our modern philosophy, technology suffices it.
When watching these kind of documentaries, I come to the conclusion that the Cult of Immortality, the Cult of Eternal Youth and Hedonism are the high priority persuits where technology thrives on and keeps a good chunck of the economy going on.
(read also The state of affairs regarding food what kind of industries have originated to persuit these goals)
Could Mother Earth really cope with extra billions of people, could Mother Earth really cope with people who reach easily the 100+ due to all new technologies?
What’s the meta-benefit in its true core essence that we’ll have machines (be it internal or external) that are much smarter than us?
(in 2050 computer processors have the capability of nine trillion human brains in computing power)
Where’s the respect for the cosmic and natural path of living beings?
I’m still trying to grasp the path humanity has chosen and what the reasons are for that.
The future will be certainly exciting, even if the Cyborg society comes to reality, all new kinds of challenges and issues will need to be addressed.
How do you think it will unravel?
